The Journey From Chris to Laochra

Chris Kirby, or Laochra as you all know him, is a Photographer born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. Chris left Ohio at the age of 19 to become a United States Marine which, incidentally, is where his photographic journey took off. Without seeing the world as a Marine, Laochra would never have discovered his love for photography. So, let us begin there.

Since the blustery winter of 2005, Chris, has had a camera in his hand. He started with a 3MP “point and shoot” which traveled with him on deployment with the Marine Corps to Camp Lemonier, Djibouti. Later, Chris shelved his modest little P&S for a Coolpix. The shutterbug began to bite and technology grew with leaps and bounds as Chris bought his first iPhone. This allowed his interest to mature into a hobby that could be engaged at any time or place. The iPhone was followed by a Rebel T5, which lasted long enough for Chris to outgrow its capabilities and realize that some cameras simply can’t do what you need them to do as his knowledge and understanding of photography grew in tandem with his creative vision.

Occasional hobby shots and behind the scenes projects have morphed into a deeply engrained passion to tell a brand new story. Professional shooting began in earnest during the color splashed autumn of 2014. Chris was quickly shooting with local models, startup businesses, well established companies, and friends all having a unique tale to tell. Now creatively known as Laochra, he works entirely on professional gear, making his vision come true in each picture like never before.

Sporting his primary professional gear and new drone, Laochra is flipping the script. He’s showing what is all around us, hidden in plain sight. Laochra shines light on the pure and wonderful subjects you drive by, walk by, and mostly ignore each and every day. Focus is always trained on complexity of art that will rarely see the inside of a gallery, nor should it.
